The Low Down On A Pellet Burning Stove

A pellet burning stove will give you lots of features that will absolutely warm up your life.  They are not only nostalgic, they provide hours of warm heat to make your house a home.  They are so much better than wood burning stoves because they are much, much friendlier to the environment.  They are fairly new to the market and have proven to be a much-desired addition to many homes.

Pellet stoves use small pellets for their fuel and these pellets are usually made up of sawdust, bark, nutshells, corn and soybeans.  They are much safer to use than wood-burning stoves because they emit considerably less nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide into the air.  They are so safe that they do not need to be certified by the EPA.  On the other side of the coin, they do have a few disadvantages.  They often require that you hire a contractor if anything should go wrong with their complicated mechanisms.  In addition, they require electricity to operate so it is advisable to have a backup generator in case the power goes out.  But, all in all, pellet stoves are a good investment for today’s home owners.

Pellets, of course, must be purchased in order for you to use your pellet stove.  The average American uses about three tons of pellets per year to heat their homes.  This currently amounts to approximately $600.00.  As with any commodity, the prices continue to rise as demand goes up.  However, you won’t need to buy cords of fire wood (which can be expensive also) and you will need much less storage space for your pellets.

If you agree that now is the time to convert to a pellet burning stove, then take the next step and decide which brand and model you want.  Go ahead and estimate how many pellets you’ll need over the next few months so that you can add that amount into the original price of a pellet stove.  You may want to only buy an insert if you already have a fireplace.  Otherwise, look at your options in freestanding stoves.  There are many to choose from, at a large variety of prices.
